Our Canine Blood Bank
In early 2004
here at Manly Road Veterinary hospital a Canine Blood Bank was
started. With the help of 32 retired greyhounds now being
cared for by the hospital, we are able to save many more lives
which have been struck down with illnesses such as auto immune
diseases which destroy the animals red blood cells, poisoning from
rat bait, trauma caused by road traffic accidents as well as many
other diseases or ailments.
These lovely dogs have been blood typed as universal donors, which
will reduce/prevent any adverse reactions. Generally they would
donate 450 mls of blood every 2 – 3 months which is used either as
whole blood or plasma, to treat a variety of illness. Our blood
donors are vaccinated yearly, heartworm tested, preventatively
treated and wormed routinely, giving them a clean bill of health so
they can live out their later years being well cared for and also
helping save lives. These dogs are our true life savers.
If you would
like any information on adopting one of these greyhounds please
